What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a chronic condition where the body's sugar metabolism is disrupted. Our retina contains many small blood vessels. Diabetes affects the walls of these small vessels throughout the body. As a result, red blood cells transport less oxygen, and our retina receives fewer nutrients.

What causes diabetes?
Diabetes has various causes, and how it develops isn't always clear. That is why it’s important to have an eye exam if you experience symptoms of diabetes.
Treatment for diabetes
The optometrist at Oogwereld can recognise signs of diabetes in the retina. This requires an optometric exam. If necessary, the optometrist will refer you to an ophthalmologist.
