What is hay fever?
If you have hay fever, you are allergic to pollen from grasses, plants, or trees. The symptoms associated with hay fever arise when you come into contact with the pollen. This pollen then gets into your eyes, nose, or mouth, leading to a thickening of the mucous membranes and increased mucus production. Although hay fever is harmless and the symptoms disappear on their own, it is often experienced as unpleasant and can cause various eye problems.
How do I recognize hay fever?
Hay fever is often accompanied by the following complaints:
Sneezing
Stuffy nose or runny nose
Itchy eyes
Teary eyes
Fatigue
Shortness of breath
What should I do if I have eye problems due to hay fever?
Eye problems associated with hay fever are very bothersome. The following tips can help reduce your hay fever-related eye problems:
-
Try not to rub your eyes. Rubbing can worsen hay fever-related eye symptoms, such as itching.
-
Keep your hay fever under control by using appropriate medication or eye drops.
During hay fever season, wear sunglasses when you go outside. This will protect your eyes from pollen.
Do you wear contact lenses? Then use daily lensesDaily lenses are very hygienic and pollen doesn't have a chance to stick to your contact lenses.
Don't want to use daily lenses? Try alternating your contact lenses with glasses.
