What is farsightedness?
When you are farsighted, it means you can't see clearly up close. The closer an object gets, the harder it is for you to focus on it. The term farsightedness refers to seeing objects clearly that are far away. Farsightedness is also called hyperopia and is the opposite of nearsightedness. If you are farsighted, you have a plus power, for example +2.75, and if you are nearsighted, you have a minus power, for example –2.75.
Symptoms of farsightedness
-
People who are farsighted cannot see objects up close clearly. This often manifests when focusing on a single subject, such as during study or work.
-
In addition to blurred vision, farsightedness often leads to headaches and tired eyes.
What causes farsightedness?
Farsightedness has 2 different causes:
-
A too short eye. This means the distance between the front of the eye (cornea) and the back of the eye (retina) is too small. As a result, light rays land behind the retina instead of on it.
-
A too flat cornea or eye lens. Because light rays are not refracted sufficiently, they land behind the retina instead of on it.
Because the focal point of the light rays lands behind the retina, this leads to blurred vision.
Is farsightedness hereditary?
Farsightedness can be hereditary. However, you often only notice farsightedness as you get older. Generally, most people experience farsightedness as they approach or reach middle age. Fortunately, there are many vision solutions for people who are farsighted, such as contact lenses, glasses, or laser treatment.
