What is farsightedness?
Being farsighted means you can't see clearly up close. The closer an object gets, the harder it is to focus on it. The term farsightedness therefore refers to the ability to see objects clearly that are far away. Farsightedness is also called hyperopia and is the opposite of nearsightedness. When you are farsighted, you have a plus prescription, for example, +2.75, and when you are nearsighted, you have a minus prescription, for example, –2.75.
Symptoms of farsightedness
-
People who are farsighted have difficulty seeing close objects clearly. This often occurs when focusing on a single subject, for example, during study or work.
-
In addition to blurred vision, farsightedness often leads to headaches and tired eyes.
What causes farsightedness?
Farsightedness has 2 different causes:
-
A short eye. This means that the distance between the front of the eye (cornea) and the back of the eye (retina) is too short. As a result, light rays end up behind the retina instead of on it.
-
A cornea or lens that is too flat. Because light rays are not sufficiently refracted, they end up behind the retina instead of on it.
Because the focus of the light rays ends up behind the retina, this leads to blurred vision.
Is farsightedness hereditary?
Farsightedness can be hereditary. However, you often only notice it as you get older. Generally, most people experience farsightedness when they approach or reach middle age. Fortunately, there are numerous vision solutions for people who are farsighted, such as: contact lenses, An glasses or a laser treatment.
