History of Chanel
Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel was born on August 19, 1883, in Saumur, France. In 1910, she opened her first clothing store, followed by a hat and accessories shop in 1913. Two years later, she founded her first couture house in Biarritz. In the 1920s, Coco Chanel was known as the "Queen of Fashion." She was the creator of the Garçonne look: a comfortable style for women at a time when many women still wore uncomfortable corsets. But it was especially her design of the "la petite robe noire," a simple black dress, that made her world-famous. From then on, the fashion house became known worldwide as a producer of haute couture. In May 1921, she also released her legendary perfume, Chanel No. 5, which remains one of the best-selling perfumes to this day.
Just over a century later, Chanel has become one of the most important and trendsetting European fashion houses, with Karl Lagerfeld as its head designer. He combines the class and simplicity of Coco Chanel with current fashion trends. Chanel's collections are purchased not only by high society in Paris but also in world cities like London, Rome, and New York.
In 1999, Chanel, together with Luxottica, introduced a line of glasses and sunglasses, also characterised by a luxurious and high-quality finish.
