What is myopia in children?
Myopia is blurred vision at a distance, often "myopia". A child with myopia can see clearly up close—when reading a book or looking at a phone—but words and objects appear blurry on a blackboard or when watching television. Myopia therefore involves a negative vision.
What causes myopia in children?
Myopia (nearsightedness) is often hereditary. Nearsighted parents often have children who are also nearsighted. However, various scientific studies have shown that the development of myopia also depends on lifestyle. For example, extensive reading and screen time, such as in front of a computer, mobile phone, or television, during early childhood contribute to the development of nearsightedness. We also know that children who spend little time outdoors during their childhood have a higher risk of developing nearsightedness.
To prevent myopia, it is therefore advisable to limit screen time and let your child play outside more often. A useful rule that can be applied here is 20-20-2 ruleThis means that after 20 minutes of screen time (for example, on a mobile phone, laptop or tablet), you look into the distance for 20 seconds and spend 2 hours outside a day.
What are the consequences of myopia in children?
Myopia in children can have serious consequences. Severe nearsightedness increases the risk of eye disorders and poor vision later in life. Therefore, it's important to detect and treat myopia early.
How can myopia in children be treated?
Many vision problems in children can be prevented, slowed down, or resolved through timely and regular checkups. Therefore, have your child's eyes checked regularly by an Oogwereld specialist.
