Need a retinal photo?
Gain insight into the health of your eyes
Your eyes say a lot about your health. With a retinal photo we capture the inside of your eye in sharp detail. At our optician and optometrist, a retinal photo is a valuable addition to an eye exam or optometric assessment. That way we can check your vision and assess the health of your eyes.
A retinal photo is quick, painless, and gives our optometrist a detailed view of the retina, the optic nerve, and the blood vessels in your eye. Changes or abnormalities can often be spotted early.
What is a retinal photo?
A retinal photo is a digital image of the back of your eye. With special equipment we take a sharp picture of the retina, the macula, the optic nerve, and the blood vessels. This photo helps our optometrist assess the health of your eyes accurately and compare any changes over time.
Because the images are stored, we can see precisely at your next check-up whether anything has changed. That makes a retinal photo suitable for a first check and for monitoring your eye health.
Why is a retinal photo important?
Many eye conditions develop gradually and cause hardly any symptoms at first. That is why regular eye checks matter. With a retinal photo, abnormalities can sometimes be found before you notice a change in your vision.
A retinal photo can help with early detection of, among other things:
- Glaucoma.
- Macular degeneration.
- Diabetic retinopathy.
- Retinal abnormalities.
- Changes in the blood vessels.
- Other eye findings that may need further follow-up.
An early signal does not automatically mean you have an eye disease, but it does make timely further tests or treatment possible.
Who is a retinal photo suitable for?
A retinal photo suits almost anyone who takes eye health seriously. Regular checks are especially recommended if you are over 40 or have a higher risk of eye problems.
A retinal photo is especially valuable if you:
- Have diabetes.
- Have a family history of raised eye pressure or glaucoma.
- Have noticed your vision getting worse.
- Experience light flashes, floaters, or other changes in your vision.
- Want to be sure your eyes are healthy.
Even without symptoms, a preventive check can give a clear picture of your eye health.
How does the examination work?
Taking a retinal photo takes only a few minutes. You look briefly into the measuring device while the camera captures a detailed image of the retina. The examination is completely painless and in most cases you do not need dilated pupils.
After the examination, the optometrist discusses the images with you straight away. You get an explanation of your eye health and, when needed, advice on next steps or a referral to your GP or ophthalmologist.
