More and more children have a minus prescription: also known as myopia or short-sightedness. A child with myopia can see sharply up close, when reading a book or looking at a phone, but words and objects are blurry on a blackboard or when watching television. Myopia therefore means a minus prescription.

Myopia is often hereditary. There are, however, several factors that can make myopia worse in children, for example looking up close too much. This happens when a child looks at a screen a lot and for long periods.

Children's screen time has never been higher. They spend hours staring at screens every day, not only at school but also outside of school.

The 20-20-2 rule can be easily applied in these situations. It means that after 20 minutes of screen time (for example, on a mobile phone, laptop, or tablet), look into the distance for 20 seconds and spend 2 hours outside each day.

Spending enough time outdoors is important, especially for children. Their eyes are constantly shifting between different distances outdoors, and they're exposed to daylight. Time to get out and play!
